Identity through self-portraits

The transition from a closed and protected environment to the adult world can be challenging for many individuals. Even though you might think you know yourself very well and know exactly where your morals and standards are, you are wrong. As you enter a life where freedom is printed on all the billboards you are handed many opportunities. Opportunities that can ultimately change your life forever.

A teacher once told me to own the name given to you. Own its meaning and live it. My name is Vanessa, it is of Greek origin, the meaning of it is butterfly. For a while now, I have taken the meaning into great consideration. I see my lifespan as the metamorphosis of a butterfly. Firstly the egg, then larva, pupa and adult.  I assume that I am between the transition of a larva and pupa. Slowly coming out of a comfortable secured environment into something rather adventurous and at time treacherous.

In my photographs I wanted to capture the current emotions I am enduring. Feelings of anxiety, uncertainty and vulnerability. However, if you were to look closely at the photographs, you will be fixated with a glimpse of hope and curiosity within the individual. Even with the current exterior exposed, there is something more powerful inside that is stirring the soul of the figure, something like a pupa. A temporary layer, protecting what will soon be exposed.
